Alice's Visions

"The future is subjective. Every decision changes it."

"Close your eyes. Focus your mind..."

Return to Forks

Who Is Alice Cullen?

Alice Cullen is the smallest, strangest, and most quietly powerful member of the Cullen coven. She was turned into a vampire in the early 1920s inside a mental institution, where she had been committed as a teenager for having visions no one believed. She has no memory of her human life or of who turned her — she woke up alone, already gifted with sight beyond the present moment, and spent decades searching for the family her visions kept promising her.

Long before she ever met the Cullens, Alice saw Jasper Hale in a vision and knew he would find her. She saw Carlisle's coven and knew it was where she belonged. By the time she walked into the Cullens' lives, she already knew their names, their house, and their future — which is, in miniature, exactly how her gift works throughout the entire saga.

How Her Visions Actually Work

Decisions, Not Destiny

Alice doesn't see one fixed future — she sees where a decision is currently heading. The moment someone changes their mind, her vision changes with it, sometimes instantly. This is why her visions play out more like a weather forecast than a prophecy: accurate for the path someone is on right now, useless the second they turn off it.

"It's not the future you saw. You changed your mind."

The Werewolf Blind Spot

Alice's power has one major gap — she cannot see werewolves or shapeshifters, and any decision that involves them vanishes from her sight entirely. This single limitation drives several of the saga's biggest crises, because it means the people around Bella who spend time with the Quileute wolf pack become genuinely unpredictable to her, at exactly the moments it matters most.

Pivotal Visions in the Saga

TwilightAlice sees the tracker James hunting Bella, setting off the chase that ends in the ballet studio confrontation
New MoonA vision of Bella jumping from a cliff is misread as suicide, sending Alice and Edward racing toward Volterra
EclipseShe spots the newborn vampire army being built in Seattle before anyone understands what it means
Breaking DawnShe foresees the Volturi coming for Renesmee, forcing the Cullens to gather witnesses from across the world

Alice the Person

Beyond the gift, Alice is defined by an almost relentless optimism and a genuine love of fashion, parties, and reinvention — she treats Bella's wardrobe and wedding as personal projects with the same intensity she brings to guarding the family's future. She's fiercely loyal, quick to plan three steps ahead of everyone in the room, and one of the first Cullens to accept Bella completely, long before it was easy to. Her bond with Jasper, the coven's other outsider-turned-family-member, mirrors her own arrival: two people who found where they belonged because Alice already knew.
